Find your perfect match this puppy season

Unlike chicks and lambs, every season is puppy season!  However, there is a spike of puppies being born in the springtime. With litters cropping up here, there and everywhere, it’s tempting to think about buying a puppy for yourself. Of course, they’re small, they’re cuddly, and they’re incredibly cute. But there’s more to finding your perfect match than just good looks. Here are a few things to think about…

Do your research

It’s important to learn everything there is to know about owning a pup – what breeds suit your lifestyle best, how much it will cost, what kind of space you’ll need. Looking online is a good place to start, but the best advice will come from people who know what it’s like to own a puppy first-hand. Talking to other dog owners will give you a realistic picture of what life with a puppy would really be like. If you’re thinking of going to a breeder, check the Kennel Club’s Assured Breeder Scheme, which has a full list of approved names. Or, if you’re looking to rehome a dog, find your nearest shelter here.

Be prepared

Taking on a new four-legged family member is a big commitment, so make sure you have exactly the right environment ready for when your puppy is ready to take home. Work out how much everything will cost, including vets bills and insurance, and make sure your house is completely puppy-proofed.

Find the right food

To keep your puppy happy and healthy, you need to feed them the right food. Get advice from the breeder or adoption centre about how much to feed them and how often. Puppies should have special food designed specifically to suit their growing bodies, like Butcher’s Puppy Perfect. Our Puppy Perfect recipes have been developed to ensure the best start in life, with all the vitamins and minerals needed for bouncing energy, like essential Omega-3 fatty acids and prebiotics for a healthy gut.

Puppy or dog?

Adopting a puppy isn’t the only way to bring a new furry friend into your life – have you thought about adopting an adult dog? Lots of dogs of all ages are in need of a loving home, and sometimes an adult dog might suit your lifestyle best. Talk to your local animal shelter about what they’d recommend, and they can help you find your perfect match!

Parenting a puppy or a dog can be an amazing and rewarding journey. But make sure it’s a journey you’re ready for. That way, you can look forward to many happy years full of walkies, wagging tails and wonderful memories.
